Without Love
Where would you be without love, gentle reader? And, geeze what does this have to do with oil painting? I’ll share more shortly but first here’s a link, describing this blog’s focus, for new readers here. Welcome new readers, too!
All About the Road
This week we are on the road visiting family in Massachusetts. Why? We’re celebrating my younger sister and her husband’s 40th wedding anniversary! Holy Smokes 40 years? Yes indeed.
So in a traditional sense, I’m thinking about love. But, I also heard the fantastic Doobie Brothers song “Long Train Running” with a refrain “without love”while we were driving up the east coast this week. Shazam! What a fabulous upbeat and lively song from the 1970s.
What Kind of Love
Whether it’s love of place or family or pet or particular person, love is where it’s at. Don’t you agree? And, in particular, I’m thinking of my love of painting. It was such a treat to visit an art school pal in Virginia this week. We painted together and talked about all things painting!
So I think it’s fair for me to say that “without love” of painting, I’m not sure where I would be. The medium and the constant desire to learn and understand it has consumed my life and mind for eight years now.
When my painting pal said “Hey, would you like to paint a still life painting tomorrow?” Of course, I said yes. In fact, there are days when I realize the subject matter I am painting barely matters as much as the paint itself. Isn’t that a crazy kind of love?
Without Love Painting
So here’s that “Without Love” painting I did this week. It’s 9×12 inches on panel. And, I confess there were more objects in the actual still life set up. But most of them didn’t make it into the painting. Why? Mostly due to time constraints. But also I wanted to keep this painting simple. So here it is.
Party Time
Well guess what gentle reader? It’s time for me to head off to a delightful celebration. Share what you are loving these days in the comments below? Will you? Thank you so much!

June 17, 2022Julie,
Speaking of love, I love your still life. Now that I am learning to draw shapes I have a new appreciation for a still as well executed as this!
Also speaking of love, am in DC visiting my 99 year old mom. Eager to help, I asked if she wanted me to buy her some new things, which she clearly needed. No, she said. The only thing I want is to see my children. When all is said and done, after a rich and exciting life, love is the only thing she wants (and needs). Love on!

June 17, 2022I love this painting Julie!!
It has the sensitivity and placement of a morandi but with great color sense and much better form while still keeping some whimsy and freedom.

June 22, 2022Hiya Sachelle,
Wahoo…every word you write, in particular, “sensitivity, whimsy and freedom” describe what I seek in paintings including this one. Thank you so much for your thoughtful observations.
