What Matters

What Matters

Today we’re getting to the nitty gritty of life by asking What Matters. Really? What brings this on? Before I share the delightful details, I will welcome new readers and share the purpose of this blog and today’s post.

Small Spaces Special Places

Welcome new readers! Each year, I select a theme for my weekly paintings. This year’s is “Small Spaces Special Places.” Why? I have been surprised, even delighted, with the small spaces in our house that have captured my eye.

Also, there are the special places I see on my daily dog walks. Each morning, rain or shine, I love getting outdoors and looking for things to paint. Sometimes, we venture on the road and I share paintings of special places from these trips, too.

What Really Matters

First I must share that we have run away from wifi and cell access…again. Why? Because, it’s that time of year. We’re celebrating summer, our anniversary and the joys of camping. It’s at times like these that I reflect on the length of time I have known my beloved Mr. Himself. And, our friends who have known us that long, too.

Our location is densely wooded, mountainous, cool and lush. There are several hikes with waterfalls nearby. Everyone here including the dogs is pooped after a day scrambling over roots and rocks. We end each day with a simple meal and grateful hearts.

What are the things that really matter to you? You, of course, will decide that. But I will share that, for me, life has been so much more enriched and joyful when I think of the moments in nature that catch my eye. As we were driving to our destination earlier this week, the sky had so many amazing clouds. I strained my neck to look up as I drew these effusive, ever changing forms.

Then, in a moment’s time, we drove up the side of a mountain and the clouds were eye level. Ahhh!

Favorite Song

In the early days of our relationship, Mr Himself took me to see Edwin McCain in concert. The lyrics to so many of his songs were relevant and timeless. Here are the lyrics to his song entitled “What Matters”

Have you given up on passion living day to day.

You keep your dreams locked down inside.

Choking on a lifetime of never take a chance

Don’t wake up one day wishing you tried

CHORUS: It ain’t about the money. It ain’t about the time. It ain’t about the love you lost or the things you think you left behind. It ain’t about the losing streak, makes you feel like you’re falling apart.

What matters is your heart

Beautiful

Aren’t those lyrics beautiful? I admit we used that song as a touch point in the early days of navigating our relationship. And, these lyrics are important and poignant to us even to this day. Combine your heart with a moment to walk in the woods or look at the clouds in the sky, I promise, you’ll find what matters.

Please share what matters in your world gentle reader. I would love to hear in the comments below.

Hmmm how philosophical and moving, Julie. This post arrived at the perfect moment for me. So thanks for that.

The clouds you shared … is it a sketch? A drawing? A painting using without any colors other than whites and grays? They are beautiful and filled with that ethereal beauty that IS clouds.

Time to go take some chances! Thanks again.

      Hi Beth,

Oh my – I should have let you know that this is a pencil drawing. Sorry ’bout that. But just to let you know, I was writing this post in between thunderstorms near a wifi spot at the campground store. Ha! What an adventure!

Thank you for seeing the ethereal beauty in this drawing. I worked on it for quite awhile building layers of pencil into the drawing.

      Yes! Here’s to taking chances!

      Lots o’ love
