Safe Haven
What made me name this painting Safe Haven? I can’t wait to share with you! But, before I elaborate, here’s information about this blog. This is a place where, each week, I share my paintings, process, occasional infuences from art history and inspiration. Whether this is your first or millionth visit here, hiya, hello and a warm welcome! I choose a theme to guide my paintings each year. Where Is This
Oh my goodness, there is so much unrest and turmoil in the world! In times like these, I think about what is in my control. And, even though this seems so simple, I realize that what I see around me, right now, is certainly in my control!
And with that in mind, I get to work. I also can’t help but think how grateful I am for this painting practice I have. It’s something I have dreamt about doing and hoped for nearly my entire life. And, so, each day I give my all to this work.
Here’s a photo of my set up for this week’s painting. Guess where it is? It’s right outside my home based studio in our backyard.
Where the Wild Things Are
As I worked on this painting over several days, I realized I could have named it “Where the Wild Things Are!” Why? Because even though we are minutes from downtown Raleigh and NC State’s Campus, we are constantly encountering wild life.
In fact, the day we were unloading the moving truck when we moved here 10+ years ago, there was a sharp-shinned hawk in that beautiful cedar tree next to our garage (with the purple door). This morning, I heard the short call of the Cooper’s Hawk. And don’t get me started with a list of four-legged critters: chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits abound here.
In our own way, we are offering a safe haven for all of these wonderful wild things. And, that’s one of the many feelings I wanted to incorporate into this painting this week.
Painting of Safe Haven
Here’s a slightly larger image of this week’s painting. It’s 6×8 inches, painted in oils on an Ampersand panel. I loved the way I could see the very first signs of leaves starting to turn to luscious fall colors in the right side of the painting. And, the everchanging colors of clouds are so alluring and fun! I hope this painting transports you to the serenity and comfort that makes a haven safe.
Yes it’s for sale for $131 + $9.50 tax + $25 shipping = $165.50. To make this painting your very own, simply use the Paypal button and it’s yours!

October 19, 2023Beautiful capture of these moments before the colors burst on the scene, or the leaves flitter and fall! Love this and love how you “frame” your focus. Think that will help me too!

October 19, 2023I love the puffy clouds in the painting as well as the fury quality of the trees, Julie! You can also see your brushwork, which is very satisfying. Wonderful description of your safe haven and I’m excited about your upcoming studio event.
I would have to say that one of my safe havens is in front of my easel where I can disappear for awhile. Sometimes it’s nice to get away. 🙂
