Organized Chaos

Organized Chaos

How about some organized chaos gentle reader? What does that mean? I look forward to sharing with you. But first, here’s a warm (and bright colored) welcome to you. What happens here? I am glad you asked. Each week I share a colorful painting, a painting in progress or other painting related activities such as picture framing with you. My hope is these color clad imagesf delight your eyes and lift your spirits! If you’re new here and would like to receive these weekly posts, subscribe here. Let’s look more closely at this week’s organized chaos in the studio, OK?

The Current View

Here’s a photo of the current state of affairs here in the studio. What does that mean? It means that every tiny teenie bit of horizontal surface has been cleaned and cleared off so I can frame paintings.

There’s lots of stuff here, eh? I initially dread getting to this stage. Why? Tools and tool time are generally not my forte. But I find that once I clean up my studio and make room for the tools and dive in, I love this phase. And, there’s a rhythm to it, too.

What Rhythm

What rhythm you ask? Well, I can’t listen to music when I’m painting. But I love listening to music during this tidy up and frame phase. And, I finally have a decent awareness of what needs to happen when. Meaning? Well, I need to clean up, then get out the trusty stamp. Squeeze out some luscious raw umber oil paint on my clean palette. Gently press my name stamp in the paint. Then “sign” the front of my paintings. I love this little signature stamp.

Then I let the signature dry for a day or two. While that’s happening, I remove sawtooth hangars from frames because galleries don’t like ’em. Then? Varnish time. Oooh that’s so much fun to do. Once the varnish is dry, in another day or two, I can start framing the paintings.

This post reminds me of how many different skills are required of you and all visual artists. Not enough just to paint a beautiful and inspiring image but then all this too? You are pulling on skills that leave me thinking the word “painter” just doesn’t cover it all!

So excited for these shows! Report back to your far flung fans.
