Edge of America
Welcome to the Edge of America, gentle readers! Have you felt as if we have been hanging on to the edge of a cliff for these past few weeks…months…years? Well, I have too. But before I continue, please let me welcome new readers and share the purpose of this blog and post.
Small Spaces Special Places
In 2021, I pinky swear promise to share colorful, weekly paintings of small spaces and special places. As I write this, we are on the road in our teeny tiny camper in South Carolina.
We brought the whole famn damily including our dog and cat. We are about to return home to Raleigh after this 4 day stint. I have to say, it has been a pretty excellent time.
If you want to be absolutely positively sure you get these posts, sign up in the column over there to the right. I’ll add you to the growing email list and do all I can to share this painterly and colorful world.
Why Edge of America
You may be wondering why I called this post “Edge of America?” Well, first it’s January 6, 2021 and that’s what it feels like. But, it’s also the welcome sign to Folly Beach South Carolina. Isn’t that a fantastic welcome sign? I knew I had to paint some part of this beach this week. So here you go.
And, this is a wonderful place to visit in January! There’s a fantastic county park on the west end. You can see sky and sea for as far as you can imagine. I would definitely put this in the special places category. Bonus, we barely paid attention to the topsy turvy news till we returned to our campsite today.
Chilly Chili
We started making dinner right away and warmed up some homemade chili. Not sure why a hot bowl of chili makes everything better, but it does.
What’s your favorite recipe for managing all this mayhem right now? Hmmmm? Please do share in the comments below and thank you for reading today.

January 7, 2021Love this, Julie! Despite the fact I live just five miles from another edge of America, this looks so different. (Not to be a pain but I do wish it was larger for my ever-weakening eyes.) The blue of the sky is sooo different than the whiter winter blue here it seems to me. Fascinating.
A perfect note for the moment as well. Terry Tempest Williams, one of my favorite spokeswomen for the planet, says she seeks out horizons because they give her hope and make even the most unlikely seem possible. I’ve always loved that and it seems to be part of why I go to the beach as often as I do. So the idea that this “edge” is both filled with terrifying possibilities and exciting ones seems about right. I vote for exciting possibilities like the next wave carving the sane at Folly Beach – perfect name as well!

January 13, 2021Hiya Beth, Working on a solution to provide a larger image while complying with WordPress formatting guidelines. Stay tuned! Glad you enjoyed this post and know that you are SO lucky to be able to visit the beach because it’s so close to your home. You lucky duck!
Thanks for sharing the TT Williams perspective on horizons too.
Here’s to more folly and less madness, soon, eh? Thanks as always for reading and commenting here!
